![]() The 11th Annual Brisbane Queer Film Festival Each year the Brisbane Queer Film Festival strives to bring you the most interesting, engaging, risk-taking, inspiring, funny, beautiful and simply the best queer films from across the globe. 2010 is no different, just bigger and even better. Highlights this year include four amazing films, each as unique and as brilliant as each other, from as far afield as the UK, Israel, Argentina and the USA. Little Ashes, starring Robert Pattinson as the young Salvador Dali, paints a visually stunning and fascinating account of 1922 Madrid, a city wavering on the edge of change. Eyes Wide Open, a poignant tale of clandestine love in Jerusalem’s Orthodox community, explores the themes of forbidden passion and love, torn apart by guilt and torment, while Lion’s Den is a gritty, honest yet beautiful film that goes beyond the bounds of classic woman-in-prison drama. The fast paced, colourful And Then Came Lola is the fun-filled and sexy lesbian rom-com of the year. Once again, the Brisbane Queer Film Festival presents a selection of exciting, diverse and thrilling Queer cinema. Join us for this ten day celebration of film that will move you, excite you, make you laugh, cry and most of all, think. Warning: This festival contains films that are unclassified and therefore the entire festival is rated R. Films in this festival are legally restricted to people 18 years or older. Here are some highlights of the festival: ![]() Mr. Right Heart-warming, romantic and witty, Mr. Right follows three gay couples living in London’s swinging Soho as they hanging on for dear life through the thrills and chills of their relationships. Alex, a struggling actor, has found love and security with upper-class reality TV producer Harry. Art dealer William, trying to juggle the demands of his precocious nine-year-old daughter, is falling head over heels for soap actor Lawrence. Lars is a devastatingly handsome model who continually betrays his successful sugar daddy, Tom. And queen bee Louise is worried that her latest boy toy might be a little too comfortable with her gaggle of gay male friends. When the gang comes together at a hilariously disastrous dinner party, pent-up tensions force the couples out of their comfort zones and into deeper waters. Official Selection The Barcelona International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival 2009 Official Selection Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival 2009 ![]() Beautiful Darling: The Life and Times of Candy Darling He dreamed of being a Hollywood star…what she became was a legend. This marvellous tribute to a brief, extraordinary life shows how Candy Darling, iconic and glamorous Warhol Superstar, went from suburban Long Island roots to starring in Warhol Factory films and inspiring the classic Lou Reed song Walk on the Wild Side. In this in-depth homage, Candy is immortalised in rare archival footage, while Julie Newmar, Tennessee Williams and John Waters share insights and divulge classic Candy moments. Candy’s dearest friend Jeremiah Newton's continued devotion to her drives this documentary, which serves as a love letter to Candy and her unrealised dreams. Thirty years after she’s gone, this film brings Candy’s world back to us. World Premiere 60th Berlin International Film Festival 2010 ![]() Little Ashes Little Ashes brings to life the long-hidden, highly controversial relationship between the young Salvador Dali and the doomed poet Federico Garcia Lorca. Set across a time frame that spans the roots of fascism to the beginning of General Franco's dictatorship, we’re whisked away to Madrid in 1922, a city wavering on the edge of change. Salvador Dalí (Robert Pattinson) arrives at university, determined to become a great artist. His bizarre blend of shyness and rampant exhibitionism attracts the attention of two of the university’s social elite, Federico García Lorca and Luis Buñuel. Salvador is absorbed into their decadent group and he, Luis and Federico become a formidable trio, the most ultra-modern group in Madrid. Yet, as they strive to achieve recognition, their interests pull them away from one another. This film provides us with a fascinating account of these three artists, their time, and their relationships with each other. Closing Night Film Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival 2009, Official Selection The 9th Jameson Belfast Film Festival 2009 ![]() Big Gay Musical Aspiring actors Paul and Eddie are beginning to see their dreams come true as they find themselves the stars of the popular off-Broadway musical comedy, "Adam and Steve Just the Way God made 'Em." While dealing with their sudden professional notoriety, the two find their personal lives in disarray, mirroring the lives of their onstage characters. Dissatisfied with dating, Paul decides that he should try to be a slut, just like the tap-dancing, shirtless angels that share his dressing room. But does manhunt suit a guy who's really yearning for true intimacy? Then there's virginal Eddie, stumbling into the world of casual sex while fretting about the impending visit by his religious parents. Well, the show is centred on a Bible story, he tells them. But he obscures the gay aspect of the musical, not to mention of himself. The Big Gay Musical is a smart and sexy satire filled with lots of eye candy and catchy tunes.
