14th Annual Spanish Film Festival 2011

An international roll call of the best in Spanish and Latin American contemporary cinema is set to unspool at the 14th Spanish Film Festival this May with a spectacular lineup of 36 films touring six Australian cities. Festival Director Natalia Ortiz has scoured the globe to deliver a programme with films that hail from countries including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Perú, Spain and Venezuela, making the event a truly international and world class celebration of cinema in the second most widely spoken language on earth.

The Opening Night Selection is the Australian Premiere of THE LAST CIRCUS (Balada Triste de Trompeta) from acclaimed director Álex de la Iglesia (The Day of the Beast, Perdita Durango, Ferpect Crime), a darkly comic tale of two clowns competing for the love of the most beautiful and cruel woman in the circus. Winner of Best Screenplay and the Silver Lion for Best Director at the 2010 Venice Film Festival, THE LAST CIRCUS received an unparalleled 15 nominations for the 2011 Goya Awards in its native Spain. Exploding with energy, this stylish Tarantinoesque genre‐bender is sure to get the festival adrenalin pumping!

The 14th Spanish Film Festival is presented by Estrella DAMM and produced with the support of the Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs in Spain, the ICAA (Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts) the Spanish Consulate in Sydney and Melbourne, The Spanish Embassy, the Argentinean Government through INCAA (Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts Argentina), The Embassies and Consulates of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela, The Instituto Cervantes and many prestigious Spanish and Australian companies.

Here are some highlights from the festival:

Black Bread // Pa Negre
Based on a novel by Emili Teixidor, this Catalan-spoken family drama is set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. A gothic coming of age fable, it tells the story of Andreu, a young country boy who witnesses a horrifying murder. When the authorities suspect his father, and his family becomes threatened by local politics, Andreu escapes into a fantasy world based on the supernatural folk tales of the surrounding hills and forests. Eventually Andreu realises he must leave his fantasy world to track down the real killer. Francesc Colomer delivers a wonderfully nuanced performance as the 11 year old whose family life has been deeply scarred by the war. A moving story in any language, the success of this film is sure to pave the way for more Catalan cinema to mainstream audiences.

Julia's Eyes // Los Ojos de Julia
Produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by newcomer Guillem Morales, Julia's Eyes is both an impeccably constructed modern drama and a bone-chilling thriller. Julia (The Orphanage's Belen Rueda) has a degenerative disease that will eventually leave her blind. Her twin sister, Sarah, struggles with the same illness until she is found hanging in the family basement. Sarah's mysterious neighbours accept that she committed suicide, but Julia remains unconvinced. A series of clues send her on a path to determine the true cause of her sister's death. Morales's clever use of the horror genre to show a woman coming to terms with the onset of blindness is both thoughtful and imaginative. Through stunning camerawork, riveting performances and an incredibly suspenseful atmosphere, the audience is placed within Julia's troubling world. This is a sensational horror-thriller that will have audiences jumping out of their seats in fright.

Bon Appetit // Bon Appetit
Bon Appetit is a romantic comedy with extra spice, set in the kitchen of a top gourmet restaurant. Unax Ugalde plays Dani, a trainee chef from Spain who has come to Zurich to learn from the best. Instead he finds himself falling for a German sommelier, Hanna who already has a boyfriend. When Dani's own girlfriend in Bilbao threatens to come and join him, things bubble over and the plot thickens.

Reflecting the true sounds of international kitchens, the dialogue in this witty film is mostly in English. Debut director David Pinillos has created a delicious rom-com about the thin line between love and friendship. There are lashings of laughs to be had in this Spanish-German-Swiss co-production, with plenty of eye candy not only among the cast but in the gorgeous European city locations.
