![]() Asa & Friends – are J-Pan Fans The Asa & Friends series of shows continues this weekend when Mr. Broomhall will welcome the band J-Pan Fan. It will be a night of girl rock and musical surprises. It’s coming to Stage Door @ The Tempo Hotel (formerly Dooley’s Hotel) in Fortitude Valley Saturday, July 10. Asa and his band will open each night with their exuberant take on roots, rock and blues and then J-Pan Fan will play a full set before the night ends with some surprising collaborative efforts. Guests include Saturday, July 10 – J-Pan Fan (rock) Saturday, July 24 – The View From Madeleine's Couch (world music) Saturday, July 31 - Danny Widdicombe (alt country/ bluegrass) Your Host: Asa Broomhall Australia's favorite Rock/Roots larrikin; Asa Broomhall has done it again with his latest self-produced album Revelry Road. Recorded live over five days in the farmhouse where Asa grew up on the Sunshine Coast. It builds on Asa's previous work by seamlessly combining full band tracks and solo acoustic songs showing the true depth of his songwriting and musicianship. You may say it is a Rock and Roll Record with a hint of Folk but it has elements of Blues, Country and even a bit of Calypso? This album also features some of South-East Queensland’s finest musicians on instruments such as cello and piano and an appearance on guitar by one of Australia's most revered artists; Mark Lizotte (Diesel). On stage, Asa's dynamic live show has taken him from local venues and festivals to touring with national and international artists (including Evermore, Diesel, Pete Murray, Jeff Martin, Ian Moss, Chris Whitley, Kelly Joe Phelps…) and performing in the UK, Canada and the USA. And with four self-funded, independent and self-produced releases under his belt, Asa's dedication to his music and his live show is obvious. www.asabroomhall.com www.myspace.com/asabroomhall Guests include Saturday, July 10 – J-Pan Fan Her Japan fan (or Jay-pan fan as she pronounced it) was what June Carter-Cash told husband Johnny she’d be waiting behind when he finds her in Jackson, the place they both plan to flee to when their relationship crumbles, as told in the song of that city’s name. This is a new Brisbane band, J-Pan Fan. The femme who fronts the Fan carries the better balance between class and street and has a unique vocal instrument that channels delicate fragility and primal feminine mania. Emma Carton comes from a long history of performing as a solo artist and now brings three talented musicians into the mix. Jonny Ryan has played drums across Europe with live sensation Van Lustbader. Bassist Rob Crook has cut his teeth with intricate hard rock group Manual and guitarist Pete Heywood made noise with Bulldozer in the 90s. J-Pan Fan got together after Emma was asked to do a solo show - she was sick of being on stage alone and needed friends to party with so J-Pan Fan was formed. Since their creation in May 2008, J-Pan Fan have played many shows including the Massive Sounds Festival, supported Final Days of Autumn at The Zoo and played the 4ZzZ Side Show Alley as well as the Fete de la Musique. www.myspace.com/jpanfan Saturday, July 24 – The View From Madeleine's Couch Not playing very often in Brisbane, it’s a rare treat to… Now in their 11th year together, The View From Madeleine’s Couch remains one of Australia’s finest world/fusion ensembles, their energy and passion for Brazilian music undiminished. Their second album Casa da Boa Vida (house of the good life) has just been released through Vitamin Records. Bom Fazer, from the album won the Best World Music Song category of the QSong Awards, and Palmeiras do Sul, also from the new album, will be featured in the soundtrack of U.S. Indie surf film, Hard Breakers. The band’s sound is as seductive as ever; from the lush, lounge-vibe of bossa nova inspired tunes, to rhythmic songs flavoured by the groups experiences in Brazil studying with master percussionists and playing with legends like Alberto Farah (pianist/producer/m.d. – Elza Suarez, Joyce) and Marcio Bahia (drums – Hermeto Pascoal, Hamilton de Holanda). www.myspace.com/madeleinescouch Saturday, July 31 – Danny Widdicomb 2009 was a successful year for Danny Widdicombe. He became an ARIA nominated songwriter, released a critically acclaimed solo album Dominoes, was short listed for the G.W. McLennan Fellowship, was a finalist in the Qsong awards and had a new hip installed to boot! This year he's just looking forward to walking properly again. Danny also writes, sings and plays with the interstate ‘boozegrass’ collective known as the Wilson Pickers. Sharing the stage with 4 of Australia’s best songwriters, Danny and the Wilson Pickers have been nominated for the 2009 ARIA award for best Blues and Roots album. “Dominoes finds Danny at the top of his game. A man in rare form vocally, in storytelling and musically with a swagger and melancholy sweeping through this vibrant record at every turn.” Nick Argyriou, Rhythms Magazine http://www.myspace.com/dannywiddicombe Asa & Friends Venue: Stage Door @ The Tempo Hotel (formerly Dooley’s Hotel) Dates: Saturday Nights during July from 8pm Cost: $10.00 Admission
