Becoming Bill
Former “Ten Tenor” Bradley McCaw, who has performed alongside Bernard Fanning and Pete Murray, and in lead roles in Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd and Jesus Christ Superstar to name a few, will premiere his coming-of-age musical Becoming Bill at the Judith Wright Centre on Friday 29 October 2010.
Celebrated for both his acting (he has appeared in numerous local productions and was accepted into NIDA) and music (he is currently a member of pop rock band Friends of Hers), Bradley McCaw says he is excited to embrace both crafts in Becoming Bill, his first attempt at writing a musical.
“I’ve always had a real passion for the arts,” McCaw says. “Becoming Bill is an opportunity for me to combine my love of both acting and music. It’s a semi-autobiographical musical, and a very personal account of one man’s journey to understand himself and his actions.
“Writing a musical is a very exciting and scary process, given you have a duty to the story and dramatic crafting of the show. At the same time you know what you want the show to say and it's about finding a way to marry the two.
“But my main aim is to write songs that come from the heart - from mine initially, and then songs that come from the hearts of the characters. Songs that speak about how someone feels at a precise moment of confusion or happiness. I feel these are the types of songs that move us. They are examples of the human spirit, examples of how we feel, and that's what a good musical does really - gets us in our hearts.”
Becoming Bill is based around the life of Bill (Bradley McCaw), a 25-year-old struggling actor who can’t seem to get his life together. The audience meets Bill five years into his difficult relationship with Kimberley, the latter of whom is played by Kathryn McIntyre who garnered critically acclaimed reviews in the contemporary musical, Handle with Care at the Judith Wright Centre earlier this year.
Throw into the mix a mother (played by critically acclaimed Brisbane performer Alice Barbery) who considers Bill her best friend and an extremely lazy brother (played by Leon Cain, the star of the smash hit I Love You Bro at La Boite), and the result is a somewhat complicated reality.
Becoming Bill is the second installment in the HUM series, an initiative of Judith Wright Centre and Joymas Creative (who together presented the critically acclaimed musical Handle with Care). Only 80 tickets are available for the one night only performance on Friday 29 October 2010.
“McCaw is the light that constantly shines, eclipsing all who come before him on stage.” stagediary.com review for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
