Douglas Kirkland: A Life in Pictures
Presented in association with Brisbane Festival 2010, 'Douglas Kirkland: A Life in Pictures' is the first major retrospective of Kirkland’s celebrated photography in Australia.
In a career spanning more than 50 years, Kirkland has worked across the fields of photojournalism, celebrity portraiture and film photography. 'A Life in Pictures' brings together more than a 120 intimate observations from his time spent working in the fashion and entertainment industries, and features some of the world's most enduring public figures and entertainers.
Kirkland began his career in the 1950s as an apprentice for celebrated fashion photographer Irving Penn. During the 1960s he established himself as one of most promising photographers of his generation, undertaking acclaimed assignments on Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel and Audrey Hepburn. 'A Life in Pictures' includes these key assignments along with some of Kirkland's best known celebrity portraits, including images of Dennis Hopper, Brigit Bardot, Faye Dunaway, John Lennon, Stevie Wonder, Jack Nicholson, John Travolta and Andy Warhol. The exhibition also features a landmark presentation of photographs taken during the production of Thriller, Michael Jackson’s seminal 1983 music video.
Douglas Kirkland has also worked as a special photographer on the set of more than 100 films. 'A Life in Pictures' features some of his most iconic imagery, created for films including The Sound of Music 1965, Out of Africa 1985, Titanic 1997 and Australia 2008.
