Empire Burning
Eugene Gilfedder, one of Queensland theatre’s most recognised and respected performers, unleashes a searing script of myth, madness, trauma and terrorism with Empire Burning.
The six-time Matilda Award winner has attracted one of the most exciting ensembles to be seen on stage this year, with performers of the calibre of Damien Cassidy, Michael Futcher, Sasha Janowicz, Niki-J Price and Steven Tandy bringing Empire Burning to life for its premiere season as part of The Independents 2011 at Metro Arts.
Created as a reflection on modern terrorism and an examination of its historical origins, Gilfedder has warped and twisted the fires of Rome and the characters surrounding Nero (played by his son, Finn Gilfedder-Conney) out of their time and into ours.
Figures begin to appear from out of nowhere, bursting into flames and setting a modern metropolis ablaze. One of these strangers survives and is captured, but the intense silence of this enigmatic Prisoner (Dan Crestani) soon ignites a monumental battle of power, politics and passion.
A veteran of more than 150 productions, Gilfedder has jumped back in the driver’s seat, creating Empire Burning to explore and clarify his thoughts on one of the key issues of our time and to also experience the thrill of presenting his own work to an audience.
“It’s frightening and exhilarating, no doubt about it,” Gilfedder said. “To feel that what you say connects with others, that you can deeply engage an audience and offer a new perspective through an original story is deeply satisfying as a writer.”
Melding history and science-fiction with an evocative, poetic language, Empire Burning throws Western anxieties of the Other into sharp relief. Tickets to this highly anticipated new work are now on sale.
