Fashion Models on Film

As part of the 2011 Loreal Melbourne Fashion Festival, this March the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) presents Fashion Models on Film, a program exploring the modelling industry from every angle: from the inner workings of a 1980s agency to the success of 1990s supermodels, right through to the state of modelling today.

The program opens with the groundbreaking documentary, Picture Me: A Model's Diary (2009), featuring the exploits of New York model Sara Ziff, as her former boyfriend Ole Schell set out to record her rise to the top of the modelling world.

Following her around New York, Milan and Paris, Schell captures the often confronting realities of working in an unregulated industry as Ziff and her colleagues - Catriona Balfe, Sena Cech Oliver, Missy Rayder, Katia Kokoreva, Diana Dondoe and Cameron Russell - share their experiences of the modelling world.

Co-directed by Ziff and Schell, Picture Me: A Model's Diary was awarded Best Picture (Audience Award) and Best Fashion Film at the 2009 Milan International Film Festival. Since its release, Ziff continues to be a strong campaigner for model rights and is working with Fordham's Fashion Law Institute to develop the Model Alliance and an industry code of conduct.

Harking back to a time when supermodels ruled the roost is the Robert Leacock documentary, Catwalk: Milan, Paris, New York (1996). Christy Turlington exemplifies how being genetically blessed can be turned into an art-form as she models the spring collections across the fashion capitals of the world.

Joined by her contemporaries Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Carla Bruni, and an astonishingly youthful Kate Moss, the film shows Turlington at the height of her powers - in demand, in control and everything one would expect from a supermodel.

With punk pioneer Malcolm McLaren providing the soundtrack, Catwalk: Milan, Paris, New York also features appearances from some of fashion's most celebrated names: Giorgio Armani, John Galliano, Karl Lagerfeld, Valentino, Jean Paul Gaultier, Isaac Mizrahi, Gianfranco Ferré and Azzedine Alaïa.

In its Australian premiere, Dressed For Summer 2011 (2010) is the next instalment in Mademoiselle Agnès' decade long series. A much loved fashion journalist and television host in her native France, Mademoiselle Agnès, aka Agnes Boulard, reveals major trends for the upcoming European summer and predicts the faces to watch in 2011.

From prolific filmmaker Frederick Wiseman is the rarely screened documentary, Model (1980). Wiseman turned his camera in the direction of New York modelling agency Zoli (now part of the agency Click), where he captured an incredible snapshot of the industry predating the supermodel era, from modelling agents to stylists to potential models and photographers.

Capturing the buzz surrounding an Oscar De La Renta fashion show and providing an equally fascinating insight into the filming of a panty hose commercial, Model contains plenty of familiar faces from New York in the 80s and fittingly includes a cameo appearance from Andy Warhol.

ACMI Film Programmer James Nolen says, "Many are called, but few are chosen. For the rest of us, here's an opportunity to live vicariously through the lives of four decades of fashion models. From cult documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman's Model, right up until the latest fashion parades from the Paris runways, you'll see models in a whole new light!"

Fashion Models on Film screens exclusively at ACMI in Melbourne from Saturday 5 March until Thursday 17 March as part of the 2011 Loreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. For program information or session times please visit www.acmi.net.au
