Format Festival

The Format Festival is a DIY / artist run festival in Adelaide, comparable to This Is Not Art in Newcastle and Next Wave in Melbourne. The aim is to make a two week event that blurs the point between arts and activism. The festival began in 2007, led by Joel Catchlove and Ianto Ware, who effectively overran an attempt by Rino Del Zoppo to set up a new writing festival and turned it into a DIY one instead.

The FORMAT spaces
The ZINE SHOP
The Format Zine Shop opened in June 2009 and has had various locations around the Adelaide CBD. Did you manage to find it? If not, here’s your chance! We’re open from 3pm every day of the Format Festival. You can find over 300 titles in store. We’re also running a small food and beverage cafe to make the experience all the more enjoyable. Come in and browse!

The MCKEAGUE SPACE
The basement of the Format Space has been lovingly named after a dear friend of the 2009 festival, Jillian McKeague. Without her, we may or may not have been arrested last year.

The FAUSTO COPPI SPACE
Named after the 'world’s greatest cyclist' (Ianto Ware, the Exeter, January 2010), the mezzanine of the Format Space will play host to rotating art exhibitions during the festival.

The ALLAN SCOTT AUDITORIUM, UniSA City West Campus
With the support of Fringe, ArtsWest, the Adelaide West End Association and UniSA’s Art, Architecture and Design school, we’ll be launching Renew Adelaide at the Allan Scott Auditorium which is on the ground floor of the Hawke Building at UniSA’s City West campus. The launch features a forum featuring Christie Anthony (Fringe), Marcus Westbury (Renew Newcastle) and Stephen Yarwood (Adelaide City Council) entitled Space, the Arts and Adelaide.
