Furious Angels
The final production in Metro Arts’ flagship performing arts program The Independents for 2010 is a one-man tour-de-force set within the confines of a decaying 1930s mental asylum. Daniel Mulvihill (Toy Symphony, 25 Down) splits himself between the five inhabitants of Furious
Angels’ fragile and at times, darkly amusing world.
With the doors of his asylum facing closure, head physician Dr Aintel is in no position to face the
disruptive challenge of another new charge, the charming yet confounding Will. Watching on, asAintel grapples to maintain power over his asylum, patients and nurse Lenore, is Dizzy, a patient-come-prophet suffering from visions of history and the terrifying future which approaches.
Under the direction of Travis Dowling (Lazarus Won’t Get Out of Bed), Furious Angels is an
examination of how humanity treats the weakest among us and holds a mirror to history and society’s ability to disrupt, destroy and inspire insanity. At its core, it remains optimistic that as individuals we can ultimately transcend, endure and survive.
Interwoven with elements of some of the defining figures from modern society, including Gandhi,
Hitler, George W. Bush, Edgar Allan Poe and William Shakespeare, Furious Angels is a deeply personal work from rising Queensland playwright David Burton (April’s Fool).
Currently under the mentorship of Michael Gurr through the JUMP National Mentoring Program, Burton fuels Furious Angels with an energy stemming from the frustrations he has experienced in seeing his younger brothers, both affected by Asberger’s Syndrome, struggle to communicate and be heard as themselves.
This energy is channeled to extraordinary effect by Mulvihill, who as a former carer, has a world of
understanding of how people with disabilities can and should be treated, ultimately creating in Furious Angels a theatre experience that is both electrifying and moving.
