![]() Hola Mexico Film Festival 2009 In June this year Hola Mexico became the first Mexican film festival to ever play in New York. The festival also played to audiences in Chicago and Los Angeles, and next year will debut in New Zealand. For now the festival is back in Australia, where it all began, and creator Samuel Douek is ready to unleash his fourth program into cinemas across the country from November 18 to December 20. Once again the festival program reflects the maturity of Mexican Cinema, and includes many of the most popular and awarded Mexican films of the past 12 months. “Mexican films are artistic, raw and alive”, says Douek. “They carry stories that are not easy to find from another country”. Including films from this year’s Cannes, Venice, New York and Sundance film festivals – the vibrant program plays in Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne, and features two documentaries, two family films, two sexy comedies and nine feature films! Opening Night The festival opens with SIN NOMBRE, an epic dramatic thriller from award winning director Cary Fukunaga. A hit of the Sundance Film Festival this year, SIN NOMBRE tells the story of beautiful young Honduran woman who joins her father and uncle on an odyssey to cross the gauntlet of the Latin American countryside en route to the United States. Along the way she crosses paths with a teenage Mexican gang member, who is manoeuvring to outrun his violent past and elude his unforgiving former associates. Opening Night Fiesta will be host to a number of sensual delights, from live entertainment to fabulous Mexican food and drinks! Sexy Comedias Mexico has a tradition of making comedies about sex. This year the festival showcases two of the best! The winner of six major festival awards, SEXO, PUDOR & LAGRIMAS (Sex, Shame and Tears) is an outrageous comedy that explores the battle of the sexes-and the exes! The second film in the SEXY COMEDIAS section represents a Mexican entry into the “hip crime” genre popularised by Quentin Tarantino. In ASESINO EN SERIO (Murder Seriously) Detective Martinez has been assigned to investigate a series of very unusual murders. It appears to the detective that a serial killer has been eliminating women by pleasuring them to death...A sexy crime thriller with a heavily comic slant. Documentaries Winner of the 2009 Los Angeles Film Festival LOS QUE SE QUEDAN (Those Who Remain) traces the families of people who have crossed the border to the United States in search of better opportunities, revealing the impact emigration has on their lives. Fresh from the 2009 Venice Film Festival comes LOS HEREDEROS (The Inheritors), a documentary which tells the story of many children in Mexico, who begin work in the countryside at a young age. These children have inherited tools and techniques from their ancestors, but they have also inherited their day-by-day hardship. Family Films The first of two films screening in the Family strand, OTRA PELICULA DE HUEVOS Y UN POLLO (Another Egg Movie and a Chicken) follows Toto, Willy and Bibi into their new adventure! Full of double entendres and filmed in Spanish language this is also a cartoon for big kids. Que huevos! Also family friendly is NAVIDAD S.A. (XMAS, INC.), a story of a Santa Claus who is battling a melting North Pole whilst trying to rid the holiday of its capitalist nature! Following are some highlights of the festival...
