Momentum

Momentum bursts onto Australian stages in May 2011 in a splashy, high-energy spectacle that almost defies description. A combination of music, dance, theatre, percussion and liberal doses of humour, Momentum promises 80 minutes of fiery physical feats set to unstoppable rhythms and beats.

Momentum is the latest work from Tel Aviv–based theatrical company Mayumana who come to Australia direct from Broadway after making their U.S. debut. This funky international troupe opens at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre, Star City on 17 May for 8 shows only before touring to Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne.

Boasting an outstanding international cast, this unique theatrical experience includes exuberant devil dance moves, stunning set designs, cutting-edge theatrical technologies, exciting physical feats and driving live music as these super-talented artists play not only amongst themselves, but also with the audience, guaranteeing a totally unique experience every night.

With technologies developed specifically for Momentum, an ever-changing experience is produced through dialogue between sophisticated systems, simple effects, the wild imagination of the creators and the virtuosic talent of the performers. Trigger activated sound and light effects, light sensors that activate sounds systems, live sampling and synchronised video segments, live 3-D depth-sensing technology, touch screen technology – all combine to create this fiery, colourful feast.

“Infectious beats and physical pyrotechnics to match” New York Times

“A high-energy spectacle, with intricate beats, flashy costumes and elaborate choreography!”

Producer Rodney Rigby (producer Jersey Boys and Rock of Ages) said “Momentum is an astonishing evening of high-energy rhythms, dance and fantastic humour that transcends any age and is sure to get you up onto your feet.”

Fellow producer James Cundall, CEO Lunchbox Theatrical Productions said, “Every so often a theatre show comes along that is refreshingly different and makes me as a producer sit up and take notice. Momentum is just such a show – it is quirky, fun, clever, full-on and hugely entertaining. It’s a show of today, for today.”

Mayumana is a multicultural troupe that represents art with no boundaries, creative freedom and the love of life. It was established in 1996 in Tel Aviv, and has developed a unique language based on skills, rhythm, visual effects and, above all – creativity and humour. Over five million people in over 70 major cities around the world have already experienced the extraordinary talents of this company with different shows being staged in different countries around the world. The troupe is currently made up of about 100 members from over 32 different countries including Australian performer Spike Levy who is originally from Melbourne.
