Murder Ballads: Chapter One at the
Judith Wright Centre
The intoxicating songs of Johnny Cash, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey and Bob Dylan among others will be performed by renowned local indie bands at a new concert series, Murder Ballads, kicking off at Judith Wright Centre on Saturday 10 October 2009.
The Courier-Mail Q Song People’s Choice Award winner Mexico City are billed with Roz Pappalardo and the Wayward Gentlemen, The Good Ship, Lucy Star Satellite and Edward Guglielmino for Murder Ballads: Chapter One. Acclaimed local artist John Meyer (The Good Ship) says Murder Ballads will delve into the themes that have inspired songwriters for centuries and feature a selection of past and present songs as well as some originals.
“When it comes to the songwriting muse, you can forget love, because a lot the most powerful songs throughout history focus on darker themes like death, lust and revenge,” John said.
“We’re so excited about Murder Ballads because we get to perform some of our own originals and the tunes that have inspired us, including music by Johnny Cash, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Olivia Newton John, Jace Everett, Kurt Cobain, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Smog and the Violent Femmes,” he said. Murder Ballads will be set in cabaret style in the intimate surrounds of the Judith Wright Centre Shopfront and Performance Space.
Giant red paper roses will adorn the stage and decorate the cabaret tables to complete the Murder Ballads theme. John Meyer (The Good Ship) says audiences are in for a treat as Murder Ballads is more than “an everyday gig” and encourages crowds to dress for the occasion.
“Audiences should expect more than just an everyday gig; this is a concert series that will really embrace the Murder Ballads genre,” he said.
“For one thing, each concert will unfold in an intimate theatre-style setting and we’ve also got really strong visual projections,” he said.
“Plus we’re dressing up for the occasion; we’d love for people to join us and dress up too - think red crushed velvet and fake blood!” John said.
Murder Ballads is a new concert series featuring The Good Ship, Roz Pappalardo and the Wayward Gentlemen, and Lucy Star Satellite. For each series the core bands will hand-pick a different selection of special guests.
