Nothing Extraordinary Ever Happens
in Toowoomba. (Ever)
Toowoomba born and bred Sarah Collins returns home to share this extraordinary tale.
Two years ago Sarah Collins’ Nothing Extraordinary Ever Happens in Toowoomba. (Ever), created a buzz at the Melbourne Fringe Festival and loudly announced the arrival of a new talent. In 2011, the show was set to relaunch at Melbourne’s iconic La Mama theatre, just weeks after the ‘extraordinary’ inland tsunami ripped through Collins’ hometown and made headline news around the world.
“The timing was so horrifically ironic that I contemplated changing the name of the show. A hometown friend suggested: Oh Sure, You’re Interested In It Now, but Toowoomba Had Quite a Dull Patch.”
The show’s title in fact refers to eleven-year-old remedial learner (and Toowoomba resident) Kevin-John Vickery, who has been all but given up on by his family and teachers. Seeing an opportunity to enter the 1991 Jump Rope For Heart contest, Kevin-John takes the chance to change his life, and the lives of his remedial classmates forever - with extraordinary results. Based loosely on Collins’ growing up in Toowoomba, she brings to life over twenty delightfully quirky hometown characters, including Kevin- John.
Collins started out her career in radio with a four year stint at Brisbane’s B105, where recording voiceovers saw her gravitate to theatre. After moving to Melbourne, critical acclaim followed with a sold- out season of Toowoomba at the 2008 Melbourne Fringe Festival. Collins followed its success the next year with her Melbourne International Comedy Festival show Donna and Damo: An Asexual Love Story,
which saw the Sydney Morning Herald tip her one of 10 rising comedians to watch in 2010. With Collins’ profile now firmly on the rise, so too is Toowoomba’s -
“When I first performed the show in 2008, Toowoomba was just another country town that people in Melbourne knew very little about. The majority of my time promoting the show was spent spelling Toowoomba, or trying to explain where it was. But the flood caused people to acknowledge Toowoomba’s existence, witness its fighting spirit, and that’s right at the heart of what this show is about”.
The show will continue onto Toowoomba’s Empire Theatre June 25/26, for the theatre’s Centenary Celebrations.
“A very promising, feel-good production that should put Collins on the radar” John Bailey (Sunday Age)
“My favourite show of the 2008 Melbourne Fringe Festival” Anne-Marie Peard, AussieTheatre.com
