The Man in Black – The Johnny Cash Story

After a sellout season at the end of 2009, Brisbane audiences have been asking for one thing - “When is he coming back?" Electrifying Australian rock legend, Tex Perkins, takes to the stage again as Johnny Cash in The Man In Black. The tough, challenging life of the music superstar and his legacy of powerful hit songs will be brought to life with all the laid-back intensity of The Man himself.

The Man In Black will commence a strictly limited return season at the Twelfth Night Theatre, Bowen Hills from Wednesday 31st August, 2011. It’s a lethal combination when Australian rock royalty, Tex Perkins, takes to the stage to play one of the most influential American singer-songwriters of the 20th Century – Johnny Cash. Renowned as “One of the wildest and most electrifying front men in rock” (Herald Sun), Tex Perkins, singer with the multi-ARIA Award-winning Cruel Sea, Beasts of Bourbon and Ladyboyz, will lead The Tennessee Four in the night of memorable music.

Straight out of the classic American songbook - Ring of Fire, I Walk the Line, Folsom Prison Blues, Sunday Mornin’ Coming Down, Get Rhythm, A Boy Named Sue, Hey Porter are just some of the more than two dozen Cash hits in the show.

Cash, who died in 2003, was one of America’s most influential country music stars, his output over a long career covered a range of genres, including rockabilly, rock ‘n’ roll, blues, folk and gospel. He sold well over 50 million records in his lifetime and his music is still selling today. Johnny Cash was dealt a very tough hand early in life, but through his music and dedication he became a legend throughout the world.

Rachael Tidd, who has sung and acted in everything from Shakespeare to Sondheim, interprets June Carter’s vocal style in the show, and Dave Folley, Shane Reilly, Steve Hadley and Shannon Bourne are The Tennessee Four.

Written by Australian theatrical producer Jim McPherson (also writer of the smash hit show starring Rick Price, The John Denver Story: Take Me Home Country Road), who confesses to a 40-year fascination with the wildly unpredictable star, The Man In Black is two hours of Cash’s magnificent music interwoven with the story of his rise to stardom, his fight for survival and his eventual redemption.

The show explores his relationships – with the dynamic and talented fellow country artist June Carter, with hardened prisoners and lots in between.
