![]() A Midsummer Night’s Dream Take a wild night in the forest, throw in a bunch of wannabe superstars, a royal wedding and some really cranky fairies and the course of true love is destined for the bumpiest ride of all time. Direct from the University of Southern Queensland's Shakespeare in the Park Festival. Directed by Scott Alderdice and designed by Carolyn Taylor-Smith, USQ Theatre Alumni Inc presents A Midsummer Night's Dream. A perfect event for the festive season! Pack a picnic with your favourite food and beverage, grab your folding chairs, friends and family and join us in the beautiful Roma Street Parkland for a summer evening's entertainment under the stars with one of Shakespeare's most celebrated and popular comedies, A Midsummer Night's Dream. What does William Shakespeare have to do with Lady Gaga? According to Nundah actor Lauren O’Rourke who, plays Titania in the upcoming USQ Theatre Alumni production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Roma Street Parkland, Lady Gaga is a perfect fit for Shakespeare’s most enduring comedy. “We re-worked Shakespeare’s words to fit a song and dance number featuring ‘Born This Way,”’ explains O’Rourke. “The Born audiences just go off. Besides the fact that it makes Shakespeare more about today – they totally get that Titania is just standing up for who she really is. And that’s what Gaga is all about.” Fresh from outdoor festival seasons in Toowoomba and the Fraser Coast this is the inaugural production for Coast, Brisbane’s newest company, the USQ Theatre Alumni Inc. “There are actors and production and management staff, all originally trained at USQ, who work right across the Queensland theatre sector,” says Lauren. “So when we got an opportunity to work on Midsummer’s and then bring it to Roma Street Parkland it was just the right time to start a company. It’s the first step on a much longer able term plan of being able to contribute more to Queensland’s art scene.” Besides singing and dancing, the production demands high levels of fitness and endurance from the actors. “It’s a hugely physical show,” says O’Rourke. “It’s not just that it’s this really fast-paced show comedy, the Midsummer’s story pushes the boundaries on everything about relationships, and to bring that into a modern aesthetic we have taken a very physical combative and even acrobatic approach to the text Just like any relationship, if you get it wrong, there’ll be bruises. The USQ Theatre Alumni Inc. have forged a relationship with the Roma Street Parkland in order to bring their production to an outdoor venue. “Shakespeare in a beautiful setting like Roma Street is about fun says Lauren. “It’s about people getting with a bunch of friends and bringing their favourite food and drink along, and getting involved in the show, calling out and barraging and bagging out characters like Oberon or anyone else who tries to hurt Titania. It’s theatre without walls. It ’s a completely different event. And that’s what the USQ Theatre Alumni Inc. are about.” A Midsummer Night’s Dream Venue: The Amphitheatre, Roma Street Parkland – Brisbane Dates: Fri 18 + Sat 19 Nov – $20* preview shows Thu 24 - Sun 27 Nov and Thu 1 - Sun 4 Dec – $30* Adult $20* Conc More Information: www.moshtix.com.au |
