Hola Mexico Film Festival 2011

Mexico has always been a country of contrasts, a land where the incredible happens every day.

Mexico has the most gorgeous spaces, but many unresolved problems. Nowadays, MEXICO IS A PLACE LIKE THE MOVIES and the Hola Mexico Film Festival invites you to see it at all through its documentaries, comedies and grand dramas.

The festival paints a reality seen through the eyes of Mexican film directors.

The Mexican film industry has grown on huge steps in recent years and the Hola Mexico Film Festival is a space to showcase such advancements. The festival invites the films’ directors and actors to present their films and have Q & A’s after the screenings.

Following are some highlights of the festival...

El Infierno (Hell)
Benjamin Garcia, Benny, is deported from the United States. Back home and against a bleak picture, Benny gets involved in the narco business, in which he has for the first time in his life, a spectacular rise surrounded by money, women, violence and fun. But very soon he’ll discovers that criminal life does not always keeps his promises. Epic black comedy about the world of Mafia and organized crime, HELL helps us understand what everybody is asking: What is happening in Mexico today?

El cielo abierto (The open sky)
First came the order, then the bullet, then the silence. This documentary about Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, the voice of the voiceless in El Salvador, portrays the inevitable destiny of an announced crime and the beginning of the civil war. Received the Journalist’s Prize at the Guadalajara International Film Festival 2011.

La ley de Heródes (Herod´s Law)
After the corrupt former Mayor is killed by the peasants, poor janitor Juan Vargas is appointed new Mayor of a desert town in central Mexico. Although he tries to bring the motto of the ruling party to town (modernity, peace and progress) he realizes soon that there's nothing to do against corruption... except to become corrupt. Step by step, helped by his pistol, Juan Vargas becomes the law and the worst Major in the town's history.

Sin ella (Without her)
Jorge Colon’s SIN ELLA shows us how much a family member can guide the values and lives of the others, even when absent. Set in present-day Mexico City, the story follows Gastón (Luis Roberto Guzmán), a successful TV producer who has to learn how to be a good dad for his teenage daughter and younger son after an accident, which challenges the family not only to cope with the pain of the tragedy but also to improve their lives. With outstanding performances by all cast members and an attractive soundtrack, this drama and its dose of magical realism are bound to make its audience reconsider what family truly means.
