Our Band Could Save Your Life
(Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981~1991)

Punk Rock has always been a shambolic beast at best. It was the late sixties in Detroit, Michigan when Iggy Pop and The Stooges first gave birth to the force that we hold so dear. Drugs, record company wranglings and absurd disasters followed punk through the seventies in cities like New York and London and with the exception of bands like The Clash, The Ramones and Stiff Little Fingers, had left most of the real special heart floating in the gutter.

With the benefit of hindsight you can look back on Punk Rock and despite more mainstream opinions, it is hard to argue that the American Hardcore scene that lasted the decade from 1981 to 1991 was as close as our movement ever got to the truth. These words are more a passionate ramble inspired by a book, than an actual book review.

California seems like a strange place for all of this to start, but it is the truth. In the late seventies/early eighties, a record label called SST was starting to take form. SST was set up by Greg Ginn of the band, Black Flag and a bunch of his cronies. It was the home to groups such as Hüsker Dü, Black Flag, The Minutemen, and Sonic Youth to name a few. It was by no means the only truly independent label that was releasing Punk Rock music at the time but this is where we get closer to the source.

What was happening at this period were that loads of young bands were being inspired to form, tour, start labels, do their own artwork and release records. It was a truly do it yourself work ethic. An infrastructure, like no other was coming together. This provided a community where bands could stay at other band's houses when they toured, play together and share contact lists. It really was an example of a movement being much stronger than the sum of its parts.

For a brief moment, bullshit problems like image, race, sex and class didn't matter and you would have the likes of the spiritual Rasta Punk of a band like Bad Brains, play alongside the predominantly homosexual hardcore pop of Hüsker Dü or even the straight edge (don't drink, don't smoke, don't fuck) attitudes of Minor Threat. There were some truly awe-inspiring records made around this time and like all music it comes down to opinions, but I can't help but list a couple of my favourites that I hope you check out: Prison Bound by Social Distortion, Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash by The Replacements, New Wind by 7 Seconds, Double Nickels On The Dime by The Minutemen, Wrong by Nomeansno, Suffer by Bad Religion, Rock For Light & I Against I by Bad Brains, 13 Songs by Fugazi, Everything Falls Apart & Zen Arcade by Hüsker Dü, Creator & Hate Your Friends by the Lemonheads and All by the Descendants.

Like all good things, the magic had to come to an end. And as the eighties turned into the nineties, a bunch of kids in Seattle who were completely inspired by hardcore Punk Rock, were mixing it up with the heavy metal strains of bands like Black Sabbath and coming up with a new style of Punk Rock. This would later be labelled grunge. I was like a lot of Punk Rock fans and cheered when Nirvana's album, Nevermind knocked Michael Jackson off the number one spot on the charts in 1991.

Just like in 1977 with the Sex Pistols, major record labels were falling over themselves to sign the next Nirvana and even though it took quite a while, they managed to dilute the heart of the matter and leave us where we are today. I'm not quite sure where that is, in regards to Punk Rock but I do know that there are still plenty of artists like Fugazi, Henry Rollins, Paul Westerberg, Rancid, Therapy? and H-Block 101 that are staying true to the ideals that Iggy suggested back in 1969.
