Golgotha
By Jules Faber
In an era of mass media controlled by a few behemoths of commerce, independent means of communication and artistic expression have a difficult time breaking through. Thankfully there are a few islands of free thought and expression left. The Internet with its accessibility and relative freedom from censorship in most countries is one of those windows of opportunity. So is Gorilla Press.

Gorilla Press is the kind of communications formed by people operating outside the confines of most commerce using unconventional means. Unique and subversive Zines printed on photocopiers, hand drawn and distributed newsletters and graphic novels printed by small autonomous publishers form the backbone on this movement and in this tightly controlled era they become a beacon of independent though and expression. They also help create some of the most interesting forms of artistic endeavour out there.

Golgotha, an independent graphic novel by the comic artist Jules Faber is a case in point. Its minimalist style and understated story would encounter great difficulty finding a home at a major publishing house and its unconventional form would be too challenging for most common place readers. The only way this work could see the light of day is through self-publishing.

This first edition of a planned 12 part series is a creepy science fiction story and social comment about a prison floating in space and forgotten by the monolithic powers that rule the universe. It divulges just enough of the story to hook you but leaves a world of opportunity open so the series can follow the artist’s muse.
