2012
It’s the end of the world, as we know it and I feel fine. Thanks to Roland Emmerich (he of Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow fame) I’ve lived through another series of cataclysmic globe destroying events and never had to leave the comfort of my cinema seat. I did however have to use large amounts of suspension of disbelief and occasionally put my fingers in my ears but other than that made it through relatively unscathed.
This time around the earth’s core is heating up from rogue sunspots and causing the world to go all kinds of crazy. People in Tibet having ocean front property crazy and the heroes of the day are two actors. One that you would never have thought you’d see in a film of this type and the other, an actor you can never remember the name of.
John Cusack and Chiwetel Ejiofor are the heroes of the day and their participation helps to elevate this film out of the realm of the completely ridiculous, sort of. This is a film where proper science is ignored and action is given full reign. The special effects are quite dodgy for a film of this budget and time but it gives the proceedings a funny veneer. Kind of like watching your young ones build up a city of Lego pieces just to have the chance to destroy it in a flurry of jumpy destruction.
The film could have used a few less reels and a little better pacing at its conclusion but there are more than a few entertaining moments (including a very funny semi cameo by Woody Harrelson). It’s big and dumb but still kind of fun.

Attack the Block The alien invasion genre has been hit particularly
hard of late with the likes of Cloverfield, District 13, Battle: Los

culminating in the downright awful Skyline. So kudos to director, Joe
Cornish, for at least trying something a little different.
