The September Issue 2009/35 mm/Colour/89 mins/English Tuesday 4 August 2009 – The Regent 3 – 7:15 PM Legendary Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is often called the devil or the fashion pope, and the magazine’s September issue is the veritable glam bible of the fashion world, created in the buzzy, consumerist heart of Manhattan, with brilliant shoots in Paris and Rome. In this engaging fly-on-the-wall documentary, we observe the extraordinary style guru editing the magazine, obsessing over tiny details, brooking no opposition, and, with moments to spare, triumphantly delivering the ‘biggest one in our history’: 840 pages of the headspinning fall-preview issue. As the mega-issue somehow takes shape amid the turmoil, Wintour’s fascinating sidekicks are witnessed toiling, arguing, and bitching—especially the spectacular André Leon Talley, editor-at-large, and Grace Coddington, genius creative director, who pulls off an inspired eleventh-hour masterstroke. We are also given more intimate glimpses of Anna’s softer side as a daughter, sister, and proud mother. ![]() 17 JUNE – THE REGENT BOX OFFICE OPEN TODAY! Tickets on sale from 11:00am till 6:00pm. This year's showcase films highlight the very best of world cinema. Take a fly-on-the-wall look at Vogue's empire in THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE; buckle up for Australian director David Caesar's PRIME MOVER, the latest from master director Sam Mendes.
AWARDS UPDATE
SUBDIVISION will screen as one of the Festival’s special event films, to be joined by another Australian film with a strong Queensland connection – PRIME MOVER. PRIME MOVER, about the dreams of a long haul truckie, won the 2008 Premier’s Literary Award for best screenplay and features a predominantly Queensland-raised and trained cast including Michael Dorman, William McInnes, Anthony Hayes and Gyton Grantley. Grantley also features in St.George BIFF’s Closing Night film, BALIBO, about the murders of five Australian journalists in East Timor in 1975. Ms Demy-Geroe said two of Queensland’s leading Indigenous filmmakers would also feature in the 18th annual festival. “St.George BIFF has secured the premieres of Ivan Sen’s new feature DREAMLAND and Leah Purcell’s new short film, AUNTIE MAGGIE AND THE WAMBA WAKGUN, which will screen before the feature on opening night.” Other feature length films by Queenslanders include THE HORSEMAN by Steve Kastrissios and STORAGE by Michael Craft – both of which will screen in the Late Night programme – and documentary YES MADAM, SIR by Megan Doneman, which screened to strong reviews at this year’s Toronto Film Festival. All three filmmakers are former winners of Queensland New Filmmakers Awards, as is Ivan Sen. Eleven short films by Dennis Tupicoff will screen as part of a special retrospective at the Australian Cinematheque at the Gallery of Modern Art. Tupicoff, who trained at the University of Queensland, has made numerous animated and live-action films, many with a distinctly Queensland flavour. Some of his more recognised films screening at this year’s St.George Bank BIFF include DARRA DOGS, HIS MOTHER’S VOICE and DANCE OF DEATH. “Scores more Queensland filmmakers will have their work screened as part of the Festival’s two competition programmes, The Courier-Mail Short Film Competition and the Warner Roadshow Queensland New Filmmakers Awards,” Ms Demy-Geroe said. Ms Demy-Geroeu said while showcasing local talent was an important component of the Festival, all films were chosen for their quality. “Local films are selected on their merit, just as the international titles are. That so many quality local films have made the cut this year is a fantastic achievement for our local industry.” Screening times and tickets for the entire St.George Bank BIFF programme will be released on Friday 10 July. Multi-passes are available now through www.stgeorgebiff.com.au ![]() 9 June 2009 – FILM & FREE FUN AT KIDS’ DAY CHILDREN can enjoy magical rides in a car that can float and fly, travel to Salzburg to learn about Chinese puppet shows, wrestle serpent gods or even find another world, all in one day at the TransLink Cine Sparks Kids’ Day. As part of TransLink Cine Sparks, The Australian Film Festival for Young People, the inaugural Kids’ Day will be held in the Queen Street Mall on Sunday 2 August from 10.00am. Kids’ Day will serve up exciting free movie-themed activities and entertainment – including giant puppets and marching bands – on the upper Queen Street Mall stage area and four quality films will screen in the Regent Cinema, including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Coraline, Mozart in China and Brendan and the Secret of Kells. Perfect for the 5+ age group, the charming restoration of the 1968 musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – about a nutty inventor and his two children’s magical adventures – is certain to delight the whole family. In Coraline, Henry Selick, Director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, has delivered yet another animated treat about an adventurous girl (Dakota Fanning) who finds another world that is a strangely idealised version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets. Teri Hatcher, Keith David, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders also voice in this highly anticipated film. Equally appealing to all children 8+ is Brendan and the Secret of Kells, a story about a young monk fortifying the Abbey walls against invasion. Finally, Mozart in China is a scenic live-action film about two young boys – Danny and Li Wei – who try to save Li Wei’s grandfather’s shadow puppet theatre from a greedy loan shark. With dialogue in German and Mandarin, the film is a wonderful tale of cultural discovery and the universal nature of friendship. St.George Bank Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) Executive Director, Anne Demy-Geroe said the Kids’ Day was set to be a fun and affordable day out for the whole family. “While TransLink Cine Sparks has always included family friendly titles, Kids’ Day is the first time we’ve offered several fantastic films and free entertainment all in one day. There will be something for everyone,” Ms Demy Geroe said. Tickets to Kids’ Day films are $8. All other Kids’ Day activities in the Queen Street Mall are free. TransLink Cine Sparks will be held until 9 August at the Australian Cinémathèque at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) and The Regent. The festival gives young Australians, from ages four to 18, a window into the lives of people from other countries and fascinates and inspires young film-goers. TransLink Cine Sparks Kids’ Day is supported by Brisbane Marketing, TransLink and St.George Bank. St.George Bank BIFF will be held until 9 August.
