We Are What We Are
Jorge Michel Grau | 90 mins

You'd be surprised how many people eat each other in Mexico City. Food for thought, indeed, as we meet a dysfunctional cannibal family who face a dilemma: how to survive after the death of their patriarch, the one who had always procured victims to feed their terrible hunger. This degenerate story of a mad mother and her adolescent offspring is a brooding mix of horror and psychodrama. Diving into the dark underbelly of Mexico City, this striking portrait of family dynamics from first-time director Jorge Michel Grau will give you plenty to sink your teeth into.

"Without question one of the finest genre films of the year." - Sound on Sight

Teenage Paparazzo
Adrian Grenier | 95 mins

Adrian Grenier, star of HBO's Entourage, takes a turn behind the camera for this wide-angle investigation of a 13-year-old professional paparazzo. Austin Visschedyk is obsessed with the lure of fame. So much so that, at 13, he's dedicated himself to a career as a paparazzo - stalking and photographing celebrities, and making big money.

Adrian Grenier's documentary delves into Visschedyk's world, exploring the community of professional celebrity stalkers, and the implications of our obsession with stardom. Investigating the concocted world of celebrity that Grenier himself inhabits (he is famous for playing a character that is famous), Teenage Paparazzo takes us down the rabbit hole into our collective obsession with the reflected glow of fame.

"Fun and insightful, relevant and disarming, Teenage Paparazzo is this year's The September Issue." - Moving Pictures Magazine

Kaboom
Gregg Arraki | 86 mins

A mega-mix of Twin Peaks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Donnie Darko, fuelled by hallucinogenic cookies. This wild, sex-drenched, indie horror-comedy from director Gregg Araki (The Doom Generation, Mysterious Skin) debuted at Cannes earlier this year, garnering the festival's first ever 'Queer Palm' award.

Replete with Araki's staple pithy one-liners and white-hot sex scenes, Kaboom follows the adventures of a bisexual college freshman who goes tripping on hallucinogenic cookies and imagines (or does he?) that he's witnessed a gruesome murder. Beautiful people, stylish sex and a mind-blowing murderous cult make this film a striking addition to Araki's artistic and philosophical manifesto.

"Spins an insanely complicated narrative of sex, drugs, dreams, webchats, self-fellating roommates and animal mask-wearing cultists." – Time Out Chicago

Hit me with your rhythm stick…

Andy Serkis plays British punk legend Ian Dury in a film that distils the surly musician's style – vaudevillian, camp and hilarious. This energetic biopic from director Mat Whitecross (Road to Guantanamo) charts the rise and fall of Dury and his band of music hall misfits, capturing the essence of a charismatic rocker who possessed charm and venom in equal quantities. Serkis is the real hero here, giving a searing performance as the bulgy-eyed, self-obsessed, punk-rock poet with a chip on his shoulder the size of Essex. Like him or hate him, you gotta love him.

"A riot of clattering noise and kaleidoscopic colour, off-kilter imagery and foul language, all the good things the title promises and much more." – Time Out London

Reign of Assassins
John Woo; Chao-Bin Su | 118 mins
Thu 4 Nov     7:00 PM     BCC Myer Centre 8

She changed her identity to escape her former life as a deadly assassin – but her past is about to catch up with her. In ancient China, retired assassin Zeng Jing has settled down to start a new life, with her doting husband unaware of her secret past. But when Zeng is forced to reveal her identity, the couple find themselves pursued by a crack team of assassins trained in the deadliest of martial arts.

From filmmakers John Woo (Face/Off, Hard Boiled) and Chao-bin Su (Silk) comes a martial arts epic featuring the awe-inspiring talents of Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Woo-sung Jung (The Warrior). With plenty of dazzling swordplay and high-flying martial arts action, Reign of Assassins is a cult masterpiece in the making.

"A delightful martial-arts romp." – Variety

Jucy
Louise Alston | 81 mins
Fri 5 Nov    7:00 PM    Palace Barracks Cinema 1

A 'womantic' Brisbane-based comedy about the bond between best friends. Jackie (Francesca Gasteen) and Lucy (Cindy Nelson) together are 'Jucy', two 20-something Brisbane slackers who spend their days together working in a dead-end job, smoking pot and playing video games. Things aren't too bad – except that everyone keeps telling them it's time to get serious about their lives.

An empathetic, funny chick-buddy flick about the perils of 'growing up', Jucy proves that writer–director team Stephen Vagg and Louise Alston (All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane) are no flash in the pan.

Director Louise Alston, writer Stephen Vagg and the stars of Jucy are guests of the festival.

"It has the sentiment and trajectory of a romantic comedy, but it's about finding friends, not romance." – Filmink

El Monstro Del Mar!

Wed 10 Nov     4:00 PM     Tribal Theatre 2

Fun, sleaze and gore go hand-in-hand in this lo-fi update to the Ozploitation genre. After topping a couple of young men, three gorgeous female hired killers hole up in a seaside town in Victoria. Disregarding the warnings of the local old-timer, they find to their cost that it still isn't safe to go back into the water, because therein lurks – wait for it! – a cephalopod monster, risen from the deep to inflict a tidal wave of carnage on the sleepy town.

Drenched in gore and featuring a killer sound track, El Monstro del Mar! is a tongue-in-cheek, shotgun-wielding homage to the heyday of the exploitation genre.

Joan Rivers: A Piece Of Work
Ricki Stern ; Anne Sundberg | 84 minsMA15+

Sun 14 Nov     4:00 PM     Tribal Theatre 2

It doesn't matter if it's in a laundromat in Queens, if they're paying her, Joan Rivers will go. You think you've got a strong work ethic? Rivers, now in her 70s, works relentlessly – driven in equal parts by insecurity and ambition, as this rip-roaring documentary shows.

The most successful stand-up comedienne of all time, Rivers is still standing at the mike and letting her demons run wild, poking fun at herself with a merciless appreciation for the comedy of her own misfortune, yet without a hint of self pity.

"Joan Rivers is more than a 'piece of work'. She's an extraordinary person, and this is one of the best documentaries ever made about show business, about what it really consists of and what it demands." – San Francisco Chronicle
