![]() 20th Brisbane International Film Festival – Upcoming Movie Highlights Over the coming weeks, we will be adding movies to this page which we think will be the highlights of the festival. Check back regularly to see the cream of the crop! ![]() Like Crazy Drake Doremus | US | Bubbles@BIFF, World Cinema | 89 mins A bittersweet portrait of love at a distance that snagged the Grand Jury Prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Twenty-seven-year-old directorial wunderkind Drake Doremus stunned the jury at Sundance with this utterly modern, lushly drawn account of a crumbling long-distance relationship. This is BIFF's date movie for 2011- told with tenderness and honesty. British poetry major Anne (played by up-and-comer Felicity Jones) falls hard for Jacob while on a student exchange to Los Angeles, even overstaying her visa to avoid spending their summer apart. But when she finds herself barred from the US, their incandescent romance suddenly lurches into the realm of geographic impossibility. "An exquisite, beautifully acted gem of a film, one that should serve as a prelude to bigger things for stars Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin, as well as director Drake Doremus." - Variety Screening on Sat 5 Nov: Bubbles at BIFF Sat 5 Nov – 7:00 PM Palace Barracks Cinema 4 Thu 10 Nov – 9:00 PM Palace Barracks Cinema 4 ![]() Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey Constance Marks | US | Family Films | 75 mins Meet the man who pulls the strings of the world's most beloved puppet. As a TV star, a big-screen hero and the subject of widespread tickling hysteria, Elmo has touched the upper stratosphere of puppet fame. Now, the squeaky-voiced monster steps aside to reveal the hand that guides him: Kevin Clash, the Baltimore-born puppeteer who transformed a Sesame Street bit-player into a beloved icon of mischief and hugs. Copious archival and behind-the-scenes footage shows Clash's rise from a youth spent making handmade puppets to entertain neighbourhood kids, to his eventual entry into the world of Jim Henson's creations. Being Elmo is an inspiring ode to a furry little puppet and the man who made him famous. Sun 6 Nov – 12:00 PM Tribal Theatre 2 Wed 9 Nov – 2:00 PM Tribal Theatre 2 ![]() Melancholia Lars Von Trier | Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden | Bubbles@BIFF, World Cinema | 130 minsM Lars von Trier brings us a surprisingly moving meditation on depression at the end of the world. Celebrating her lavish wedding, Justine (Kirsten Dunst, in a performance that won best actress at Cannes) notices something amiss in the evening sky: a prominent star has been blocked out. As her wedding falls apart, and her life spirals downward into misery, the astrological anomaly is explained: the star was blocked by the planet Melancholia, which is now hurtling toward a collision with Earth. After the controversy and acclaim of Antichrist, bad-boy auteur von Trier expressed doubts about his new project: "This film is perilously close to the aesthetic of American mainstream films," he remarked at Cannes. But let's remember, that this is from the inscrutable mouth of Lars von Trier - Armageddon this surely ain't. Screening on Wed 9 Nov: Bubbles at BIFF Wed 9 Nov – 6:30 PM Palace Barracks Cinema 1 Sun 13 Nov – 6:30 PM Palace Centro Cinema 2 ![]() Helldriver Yoshihiro Nishimura | Japan | Events | 117 minsR18+ Braindead turned up to 11. Presented by BIFF, Supanova and Monster Pictures, Yoshihiro Nishimura and his posse come to Brisbane to present a madcap intro to his latest over-the-top gore-fest, Helldriver. The latest release of Sushi Typhoon, a production studio founded in 2010 by a who’s-who of Japanese cult cinema - including Takashi Miike, Sion Sono and Nishimura - Helldriver is a treat for lovers of tongue-in-cheek genre film. Having done mutants (Tokyo Gore Police, Mutant Girl Squad) and vampires (Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl), genre maestro Yoshihiro Nishimura turns his attention to zombies with this frenetic, tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top zombie apocalypse splatterfest. After a meteorite crashes into northern Japan, and people start to refuse to take death lying down, a giant wall is built across Japan to contain the zombie contagion. Kika, an 18-year-old android/ chainsaw-enthusiast, sets out on quest to destroy the zombie queen. Fri 4 Nov – 11:59 PM Tribal Theatre 2 ![]() Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope Morgan Spurlock | US | BIFFDOCS | 88 mins How many Star Wars Storm Troopers can you squeeze into one photo op? Straight from its sell-out sessions at Toronto Film Festival last month, the latest doco romp from Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) explores the pop culture phenomenon of the annual San Diego Comic-Con. Spurlock reportedly had as many as 26 cameras rolling at any one time to capture the thousands of cosplay enthusiasts, über-fans, gamers, cult movie buffs and anime nerds who swarm Comic-Con in the hope of glimpsing heroes like Joss Whedon, Kevin Smith, Stan Lee and Frank Miller. Rather than a misanthropic critique of nerd-dom, Spurlock has created a warm homage to obsessive interests, fantasy realms and the wish to belong. But remember: there's a reason that 'fan' is short for 'fanatic'. Fri 4 Nov – 10:00 PM Tribal Theatre 2 Sun 13 Nov – 12:00 PM Palace Centro Cinema 1 ![]() Cronos Guillermo Del Toro | Mexico | Critics' Week @ BIFF | 94 minsM Subversive, surreal and hugely stylish, Guillermo Del Toro's debut revived the undead in entirely startling ways. When Jesus Gris, an elderly antiques dealer, discovers a sculpted golden scarab hidden in the base of a statuette one morning, little does he realise the powers lurking within it - it isn't long before he becomes a host to the parasitical Cronos device, undergoing a strangely rejuvenating transformation. But others also crave the immortality the artifact offers: henchman Angel (Ron Pearlman) is sent by his vicious dying uncle to retrieve the coveted antique. Things are bound to get ghoulishly untidy. "Cronos is an exploded view of my brain." - Guillermo del Toro Wed 9 Nov – 6:30 PM Tribal Theatre 1 Brisbane International Film Festival 2011 |
