Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make
Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
Upon admission of the trinity of afflictions to Kazakhstan (they being economic, social and ‘The Jew’), TV personality Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen) is dispatched to "The U, S and A" to see what he might glean from this successful nation for the benefit of his mother country.
Is this just another Ali G In Da USA whereby the old UK jokes will be regurgitated for American audiences, or will it be all-new material? Well, it's mostly the latter with a little of the former. The film kicks off well with Sacha Baron Cohen nailing his character's introduction of his hometown before heading to the U.S. for some Kazakhstani ‘Norman Gunston’-style setups. Many of these are very funny and some are downright hilarious, but unfortunately there's only about 45 minutes of bona fide funny material and so the film starts running out of steam by about the midway point, descending afterwards into gags that are played more for shock value than being genuinely funny. Borat's naked wrestle with his obese manager marks the film's low point though, no doubt, this will appeal to the Jackass sect. The second half of the film is also plagued by situations that fail to suspend our disbelief. Like Kenny before it, these scenes destroy the illusion of documentary that the film strives for.
It has its moments, but ultimately it's a disappointment.

Attack the Block
The alien invasion genre has been hit particularly
hard of late with the likes of Cloverfield, District 13, Battle: Los
Angeles and Aliens vs Cowboys, each one more mediocre than the last and
culminating in the downright awful Skyline. So kudos to director, Joe
Cornish, for at least trying something a little different.
