Changeling
Watching
Clint Eastwood’s Changeling filled me with a creepy sense of déjà vu.
In the movie as well as real life, a quiet California town played host
to one of histories most atrocious crimes and this all happened in an
area that I spent a lot of time in as a youth. The town, named
Wineville back in the twenties had long since changed its name due to
the bad publicity but retained the same look and feel from the memories
of my youth. I actually had a favorite aunt that lived within blocks of
the actual crime scene and at that time I knew nothing about the
infamous Chicken Coop Murders.
With Eastwood’s
economical directorial style and Angelina Jolie’s effective and
emotionally intense performance, the film draws you in even if you have
no memories of the time or place. The character actions, set design and
props mimic the late twenties era with pinpoint accuracy and the
pacing, while a bit languid builds to a consuming climax.
Setting this story against the backdrop of the corruption of the late
twenties Los Angeles police force provides the film with that extra
sense of moral outrage and gives the viewer a real sense of us against
them and makes you really pull for Jolie’s character, a single mother
who has lost her son.
The film packed an emotional wallop that was enhanced by the memories
on my youth but even for those of you that have never heard of these
crimes, it is still a great thrill ride.

Attack the Block
The alien invasion genre has been hit particularly
hard of late with the likes of Cloverfield, District 13, Battle: Los
Angeles and Aliens vs Cowboys, each one more mediocre than the last and
culminating in the downright awful Skyline. So kudos to director, Joe
Cornish, for at least trying something a little different.
