Defiance
Making a comeback for the audiences of today, movies telling tales from World War II are seemingly commonplace. What’s uncommon however about the film Defiance is how uplifting it actually is.
Taking place during one of the bleakest periods of the War, the ramping up of the round up of Jews and other undesirables for deportation to the extermination camps, Defiance tells the story of a group of Polish Jews who escape from the Nazis by taking refuge in the thick forests surrounding their rural towns.
The Bielski brothers, both played with a believable amount of sibling rivalry by Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber lead this specific group. Watching Craig (who has helped reinvent the Bond franchise) go from his no compromise hard-line character to one with a softening around the edges is one of the film’s more engaging traits. Schreiber as the brother who leaves the group to go fight with the Russians is excellent as well.
Enduring hardship that normal people would find impossible to fathom, this group, which become known as the Bielski Partisans live in a closed community hidden from the rest of the world. This however does not prevent them from engaging in the triumphs and failures that any society experiences. It’s these moments of normalcy contrasted by the brutality around them that gives this story its impact.
Based on real live events and people, Defiance is a study of the strength of human nature and our ability to endure hardships and keep our dignity intact. It may be based on one of our world’s darkest moments but it is filled with light.

Attack the Block
The alien invasion genre has been hit particularly
hard of late with the likes of Cloverfield, District 13, Battle: Los
Angeles and Aliens vs Cowboys, each one more mediocre than the last and
culminating in the downright awful Skyline. So kudos to director, Joe
Cornish, for at least trying something a little different.
