![]() Devil After a series of missteps M. Night Shyamalan gets things back on track with Devil. It might have had something to do with his level of involvement; the film is only based on a story of his while Brian Nelson provided the screenplay and John Erick Dowdle the direction. Regardless of the breakdown of duties the end results are eighty minutes of taunt and edgy filmmaking.
All of the participants have back-story including the police detective who accidently becomes involved with the case and as these details are revealed the film gathers pace. This is helped along by a series of grisly murders in that confined space and the usual audience manipulation via sound and quick cut editing. The short running time helps with the proceedings and the film never overstays its welcome. After having his name attached to an ever-growing list of film disasters, M. Night earns a temporary reprieve from ridicule with Devil (also known as The Night Chronicles: Devil) and will hopefully carry this level of efficiency into the future projects under The Chronicles moniker.
