G-Force

My sons and I made the trek to Chermside recently for a special screening of a new spy-fi action film produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Like Jerry’s other cinematic offspring, this one had loads of pop culture savvy wisecracks as well as huge explosions and objects hurtling through the air.  Unlike his other films though, the protagonists in this one were guinea pigs. Computer generated guinea pigs, but guinea pigs nevertheless. With attitude of course.

My 7 year old became periodically bored with it all, what with the obligatory attempts to make it worthy with discussions of family and sticking together. And there was also the usual Bruckheimer Cold Hearted Government Operatives ready to Shut Down The Project Immediately and Exterminate Those Pesky Rodents, which no one had much interest in, and which served only as rest points between more 3D eye -poppin’ action.  And there was enough of that for my son to give it a big thumbs-up at the end.

My 10 year old absorbed it all with some pleasure, though on the drive home he asked me a few tricky questions including why the film had household appliances acting just like Transformers. And why there was a kid who was basically a carbon copy of the evil kid in Toy Story but in this one it was Guinea Pigs he was torturing. I mumbled something about money and homage, and pointed out the hot air balloons in the sky above us.

My own question, which I left unvoiced, was about how such quality talent had had been swayed to commit their time and energy. We’re talking Bill Nighy, Sam Rockwell, Zach Galifianakis, Penelope Cruz, and Nicolas Cage. I am sure they were paid well for their efforts, but what other inducements or perhaps threats were used?

Anyhow, the 3D is great, particularly since most of it is ‘real’ rather than CG and the director Hoyt Yeatman comes from a visual effects background. The whole shebang is done under 90 minutes. And it is fun watching the younger kids trying to snatch flying debris out of the air. My children were entertained but not enraptured. Basically, a fairly good time was had by all.

Ah 21st Century Cinema, with your 3D CGI Dolby Digital surface gloss and complete lack of imagination.
