I Love You, Man
I Love You, Man is one of those rare films that you find quite amusing when initially viewed but it grows considerably in your estimation in retrospect. The more you review this film in your mind, the better it becomes.
It’s a bit of a stock standard romantic comedy with a twist. It’s boy meets boy, looses boy, then finds boy, all accomplished while two red blooded American males become lifetime heterosexual life partners.
Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd) is newly engaged to the love of his life, Zooey (Rashida Jones) and when discussion turns to the selection of the best man, it transpires that Peter has no real male friends. He’s always been a girlfriend guy and so now he must go forth and find that perfect male to become buddies with.
After a succession of awkward man dates Peter meets Sydney Fife (Jason Segel) a geeky man-boy that says and does as he pleases. The two soon bond as Peter finds the joy in juvenile young male behavior and the music of Rush. The change of gender aside, this reads like just another rom-com but where it becomes more memorable is in the quality of the writing.
Switching the gender around allows the writers (John Hamburg and Larry Levin) to put the spotlight on a lot of the double standards that exists in modern relationships. This also keeps the humor from degrading into the usual sexist politics that drag most modern comedies into the gutter.
The writing is sharp, the character’s actions believable and the humor is neither snide nor condescending. It’s a bit of a change to laugh out loud without any feelings of guilt afterwards.

Attack the Block
The alien invasion genre has been hit particularly
hard of late with the likes of Cloverfield, District 13, Battle: Los
Angeles and Aliens vs Cowboys, each one more mediocre than the last and
culminating in the downright awful Skyline. So kudos to director, Joe
Cornish, for at least trying something a little different.
