Is Anybody There?

Edward (Bill Milner) is a death-obsessed 10-year-old boy growing up in an old folks home searching for the ghosts of its deceased residents, covertly capturing their last dying moments on his tape recorder in an effort to discover proof of supernatural activity. Enter cranky, recalcitrant retired magician, Clarence (Michael Caine), who immediately collides (almost literally in a near road accident) with Edward, a man who is either unaware or in denial (perhaps both) of his own mental degradation. Juxtaposing Edward's growing up with Clarence's growing old, Edward wants to believe that there is life after death and Clarence, grieving for his departed beloved, knows there is no such thing but secretly wishes there were.

Through his performance Caine proves yet again that he is an institution unto himself, he brings a little magic to everything he does and this is no exception. Milner, despite his young age, holds his own against his formidable co-star. The remaining cast is rounded out by a who's who of vintage British thespian talent including Rosemary Harris, most recently notable for her Spiderman gig.

Is Anybody There? is a gentle comedy with a distinct undercurrent of melancholy but whose sleight of hand is perhaps just a little too slight (and a little too predictable) to appeal to those without first hand experience of its themes. However, it is a charming film that will likely resonate with those in their twilight years, the films target audience.
