Mary and Max
In an utterly charming and very adult way, Mary and Max shows more passion and love of film making in a single frame that most films do in their entirety. This animated feature from Adam Elliot (Harvie Krumpet) and company revels in the hand-made art of stop motion animation and is absolutely gorgeous to look at.

The 80-minute feature isn’t just eye candy either. The story of two lonely hearts that become life long friends even though they never actually meet is told with all the ups and downs that exist in any real friendship left intact. It also takes the viewer into a wonderful world where even the most familiar item is recast as a work of art. Labels of common consumer products are cleverly hand draw and even the most benign household item now captures your attention.

Mary is young, lonely and lives in Australia, Max is middle age, suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome and lives in the chaos of New York City in the seventies. They become pen pals and revel more about themselves in a series of letters and presents than most people do in a lifetime of conversations. This very adult film doesn’t just drown the audience in saccharine situations but delves deep into the heart of what constitutes real friendship. Its storyline is not always easy to watch but its hand made nuances are always a joy to behold. From the actual finger print depressions in the claymation characters to the clever homage’s of youthful indiscretions this is a great place to spend some time.

Attack the Block
The alien invasion genre has been hit particularly hard of late with the likes of Cloverfield, District 13, Battle: Los Angeles and Aliens vs Cowboys, each one more mediocre than the last and culminating in the downright awful Skyline. So kudos to director, Joe Cornish, for at least trying something a little different.

In Time
In Time is a competent action/thriller in the Hollywood mould but coming from director, Andrew Niccol, who also wrote and directed Gattaca and wrote The Truman Show, it is disappointingly light.
