![]() Rise of the Planet of the Apes Defying expectations, Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a rousing ride. With a few notable exceptions, the re-boot business is a tricky one and more often than not the end results seem like a mere cash-in. The original Planet of the Apes franchise has already had a Tim Burton effort at reinvention and the results were not pretty.
Will Rodman (James Franco) is a scientist obsessed with finding a cure for Alzheimer’s, which we find out his dad (John Lithgow) suffers from. His drug experiments on apes bridges the gap between human and animal world and causes all hell to break loose but not before we become attached to all the main players. The science is believable and once you get past the slightly too obvious computer generated origin of the apes; the film has a story that draws you in. There are also a number of quite funny moments when the filmmaker drops in references to the original film. There might be a few moments of unnecessary bombast but Rise of the Planet of the Apes is an effective re-introduction and bodes well for the future. Let’s just keep those monkey Lincolns to a minimum. Rob Hudson www.apeswillrise.com |
