![]() Submarine Travelling down a well-worn path, that being the telling of the trails and tribulations of an angst filled semi-dysfunctional teenager sets out a bit of a challenge for the film Submarine. Its lo-fi look, indie vibe and understated performances do well to lower expectations. The film relies heavily on the audience’s desire to identify with the characters on screen and this is where the ultimate success or failure of the film resides. It’s initially a bit of an ask as the main players live so much in a world of their own making, leaving little to identify with other than the subtle humour at play. Given time though you begin to connect with their somewhat strange ways and start to see parallel events in your own existence. The film’s humble agenda makes this an easier transition. Submarine is a small film but more entertaining because of that. Its humour doesn’t feel forced and the actors are very organic in their approach in a way that just doesn’t happen in bigger projects. See this with the right expectations and a good time will be had. Rob Hudson www.warp.net
