![]() Super 8 If ever there was a film that reflects the touch of its producer, it’s Super 8. This rousingly good time film feels way more Steven Spielberg than writer/director J. J. Abrams. The touchstones that make up a lot of Spielberg’s work are in full effect here. The Middle America suburban setting, the children from fractured families and the coming of age elements are all intact as is the proclivity to hand feed the audience emotional signposts unnecessarily.
In a nod to the classic horror film scenario, the film is way more effective when it just insinuates the presence of the monster/alien. When this main protagonist is fully revealed it feels once again like a Spielberg moment as Abrams has proven already he can be much more effective with material like this as evidenced by his work on Cloverfield. Small quibbles aside; this is a roller coaster ride of a film and is a great addition to this Blockbuster time of year. It should also prove to be one of the more intelligent and effective works in a season of sequels and comic book adaptations. Rob Hudson www.super8-movie.com |
