![]() The Escapist From the claustrophobic and tightly cropped cinematography to the grotty weatherworn surrounds, The Escapist looks and feels like nothing else but a prison yarn. Its confrontational atmosphere and realistic vision draws you into a world that hopefully no one will ever have to experience firsthand. The main storyline revolves around Frank Perry (Brian Cox) an old-school crim quietly serving out his sentence until circumstances cause him to plan a jailbreak. The machinations of that break drive most of the story. The tale is told in a non-linear fashion and you are given key moments throughout the film that help make all the pieces fall into place. The closed world of the serial criminal infuses almost every aspect of the film and it never backs down from showing the audience how horrific and dehumanizing incarceration can be. It's equal parts intimidating and forceful. This film has a sting in its tail and one that few will see coming. It also reprioritizes elements of the story in your head and will lead to some spirited discussions afterwards. While it’s not always easy to watch and it requires your attention, it pays dividends by the time the final credits roll. Rob Hudson www.escapistthemovie.com |
