The Other Guys

Will Ferrell’s comic films are always oddly paced and his new flick; The Other Guys takes this approach to the limit. Its combination of physical humour mixed with verbal jokes and more than its fair share of embarrassing moments keeps the cringe factor as high as the laugh count.

The film also squanders a set up early on that could have substantially added to its laugh count. This potential is lost by killing off two of its main characters at the start of the second reel. The focus then shifts almost entirely to Ferrell and his police partner played by a surprisingly funny Mark Wahlberg. It’s to the filmmaker’s credit that even with these shortfalls, the film still delivers quite a few genuine laughs.

This film is the forth collaboration between Ferrell and writer/director Adam McKay and taken collectively their work on this project, Anchorman, Talladega Nights and Step Brothers sees the two using the same formula for laughs. It’s a recipe that often works but has begun to leave behind a desire for more.

Those that have seen the trailer will be slightly mislead by the early departure of two of the trailer's main stars but the rest of the film is business as usual. It has its moments and will generate laughs at prescribed moments but it leaves you with the feeling that there should have been more.
