Top Ten Movies of 2010

Modmove.com reviewer Stuart Jamieson’s Top Ten films of 2010

10. Harry Brown
Matthew Vaughan features twice in this years Top Ten, as director of Kick Ass and as producer of the similarly themed Harry Brown. Bolstered by a mighty performance from Michael Caine, director Daniel Barber's frightening depiction of London’s seedy underbelly would be higher in the rankings were it not for its lackluster conclusion.

9. Toy Story 3
The franchise that made Pixar draws to a close with fitting grace and a teary farewell to a bunch of characters we've welcomed into our hearts for what seems longer than 15 years.

8. Lou
Belinda Chayko's sleight but endearing film walks a knife-edge in its depiction of mental illness and complex familial relationships, never slipping into the wrist-slitting territory of many of its Australian contemporaries. A must-see film that, sadly, few saw.

7. How To Train Your Dragon

6. Red Hill
Writer/director/producer/editor, Patrick Hughes, melds American western, slasher horror and the Australian outback to produce a modern Chant Of Jimmy Blacksmith which is fun and without a hint of preachiness.

5. Animal Kingdom
David Michôd chisels out a niche for himself in Australian cinema history with this riveting and ominous depiction of the Aussie underworld and showcasing some of the best Aussie actors on offer.

4. Easy A
With the untimely death of John Hughes, so too died the vain hope that he may direct another teen classic. Will Gluck's Easy A picks up the baton and runs with it a few extra yards paying tribute to Hughes in the process.

3. The Social Network
Possibly the most socially relevant movie of our time, David Fincher returns to form after the technically competent but disappointingly bland The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button.

2. Kick Ass

The new top dog in comic book adaptations, Kick Ass humbles all before it and that includes the other great entries in the genre: The Dark Knight, Watchmen, X-Men and Iron Man.

1. Inception
Kick Ass may have outgunned The Dark Knight in the comic book stakes but Christopher Nolan returns fire and claims the top prize with his most inventive, mind-twisting film since Memento.
