Valentino: The Last Emperor

Few films that view the lives of the ultra privileged are as humorous or eye opening as Valentino: The Last Emperor. Matt Tyrnauer’s documentary on the life of the fashion icon, Valentino Garavani is filled with sumptuous colours, beautiful people and the petulant behavior of someone that has been pampered to the level of ridiculousness for the last forty years.

The filmmaker has also timed things perfectly; as Valentino’s possible retirement and the 45-year retrospective put together to honor his life and work provide a great timeframe and backdrop to examine his life. This event is also seen in a larger context as his company is in the process of being taken over by new owners, who want to maximize the name and brand in the public eye.

The openly gay Valentino and his life partner, Giancarlo Giammetti provide most of the film’s heart and humour as they fight like an old married couple as Giancarlo does his best to keep the temperamental Valentino on track and free from distractions. A lot of the laugh out loud moments come when the couple are just living what they see as a normal life. Weather it’s being surrounded by the extreme opulence of their huge French villa and its impressively manicured lawns that stretch almost to infinity or roving about their 100 meter long yacht shirtless and looking like old wooden trees, these are people whose lives have very little to do with us mere mortals.

The film also features a large number of train spotting moments and it’s a lot of fun to try to identify all the celebrities that float around this man’s private and professional life. Regardless of your take on the world of fashion, this film will have you laughing out loud and looking on in wonder.
