The Wolfman
After a rather slow first reel, The Wolfman picks up speed, increases the gore and becomes quite a fun little popcorn movie. It doesn’t however at any time set any new standards for the genre or add anything new to the horror movie lexicon.
While the film features a number of fine actors, Anthony Hopkins, Benicio Del Toro and Emily Blunt head the list, it’s just the script gives them so little to sink their teeth into. The lack of dynamics in the screenplay causes almost everyone’s speech to sound so stilted. Hugo Weaving as an inspector from Scotland Yard is one of the few to escape from this malaise.
The action ramps up in the second half and there are a few thrills to be had but once again the script lacks any real depth or complexity of story. This unfortunately ends up leaving very little for the armchair detective to detect.
With the current popularity of the vampire genre at an all time high on both the big and not so little screen and even though it looks expensive with its gothic sets and muted colour palette, it’s hard not to see this as a calculated attempt by a major studio to cash in.
