![]() X-Men: First Class What a difference a director with the right touch for mainstream film can have on the end results. Matthew Vaughn best known for his work directing Kick-Ass & Layer Cake has brought back the X-Men franchise in a big way. He has overcome the bad taste left behind by X-Men Origins: Wolverine and restarted the brand.
Initially set in the turbulent times of the early sixties, it uses stock black & white footage of the period to good effect and adequately captures the paranoia of the era. The fantasy world it creates is one that is easy to get lost in as you get to know the gang and their burgeoning powers. There is also a great villain to overcome in Sebastian Shaw played with an appreciable level of menace by Kevin Bacon. This comeback ranks up there with others like Christopher Nolan’s reenergizing of the Batman series and Martin Campbell’s propping up of that old warhorse James Bond with his excellent work on Casino Royale. This is how big budget blockbusters should be. Rob Hudson www.x-menfirstclassmovie.com |
