X-Men Origins: Wolverine
In an industry where originality seems to become more distant every day and during a year of prequels, sequels and formulaic films comes X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This film gives X-Men fans a chance to catch up on the back story of one of the franchise’s favorite characters and gives those in the audience with an interest, a chance to see Hugh Jackman with his shirt off, a lot.

Most should already be familiar with the film because of the avalanche of publicity due to a pirated copy of the movie making the rounds months before the actual release of the finished product. In the long run of things it will very interesting to determine if this criminal breach of ethics actual helps or hinders the film’s box office.

Removed from the media story it became and taken as just 107 minutes of celluloid entertainment, the film is actually a fairly flat cinema experience. One that is saved, barely, by the focus on a comic book character that has all the classic personal demons to provide an interesting genesis.

Jackman is suitable buff and easily provides the sinew stretched neck and upper torso to provide a believable image of superhero rage but what lets down the side are things that shouldn’t really happen in the modern day superhero flick. The special effects are rather dodgy and the story’s main twist fails to generate the necessary pick me up to the proceedings.

Some of the human elements of the story are effective and the film starts strongly with a montage that shows the characters gestation from participation in a number of our planets major fracases but this momentum is squandered as the film’s events transpire. As interesting as the film’s ultimate box office will be so too will be the reception given by hard-core fans of the X-Men franchise.
