Immortals
As eye candy, Immortals ticks all the right boxes. Large amounts of rippling oiled flesh, check, copious instances of ultra bloody carnage, check, amazing computer generated 3D backdrops, check, grizzled veteran actor as remorseless bad guy, check.
It all looks impressive, in a way that only the blue screen technique first seen in films such as Sin City and 300 can deliver and director Tarsem Singh (The Fall, The Cell) ramps things up to the realm of the ridiculous, so the action takes president over all else.
The story, loosely based on elements of Greek mythology is used as the glue to keep it all together and this succeeds, just. You end up tiring of the effort to keep track of who is who and just let all the over the top action wash over you.
In the only medium that can deliver thrills this big (the huge 3D cinema screen and large amounts of volume are integral to the experience) Immortals succeeds in being a lot of fun, silly but spectacular. Rob Hudson www.immortalsmovie.com
