AIR – Love 2
Having never been a particular fan of electronic music and finding the sound of synthesizers as a lead instrument lacking in that human quality that gives music its inviting nature, AIR has been one of the few electronic acts I’ve ever really investigated. This is album number nine and a good example of form.
The band has enjoyed quite a bit of exposure outside the music world with their working relationship with film director Sofia Coppola. They have contributed to her films, The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette. Over the years they have also given their music a warm accessibility by featuring a number of guest vocalists to punctuate their dreamy soundscapes.
With this work they take a comfortable look back and even include a song often played live but not released on album until now, Be A Bee. The tempos are mostly slow and deliberate but comforting in their accessibility. Not really music that challenges the senses, it’s more meant to buttress those mellow moods and bring about a sense of sonic euphoria.
This isn’t stare at your speakers with amazement kind of stuff but it all has a sense of quiet confidence and this assuredness is quite beguiling. On a night of heavy hits, Love 2 would be a nice nightcap.
