Together Through Life – Bob Dylan

In Together Through Life, with very little fanfare and quite suddenly, Dylan drops an album that sees his Bobness take a stroll down real Americana Avenue. It’s one of his most bluesy albums to date and his choice to augment his regular touring band with Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos pays real dividends. He can even be forgiven for misspelling David’s name in the liner notes.

Along with Mike and David’s guitar, mandolin and accordion contributions, his regular bandmates add banjo and trumpet, so given the diverse instrumental palette; Dylan’s can drop into any point of rural America he desires. From the chugging blues of album opener, Beyond Here Lies Nothin’ to the slow waltz tempo of Life Is Hard to the accordion and pedal-steel driven If You Ever Get To Houston, the album’s first half is a tip to the diversity in regional music.

The second half of the album is a little less diverse but more focused on standard blues motifs. The love lost lament (Forgetful Heart), the mint-julep porch groove (This Dream Of You) or the standard shuffle (It’s All Good), all these styles get a good workout. Dylan’s voice fits this rough sawn music perfectly and the accumulation of years of cigarettes and booze has given his tone an earthy patina well suited to these tracks.

Throughout a career that has spanned 33 studio albums and over 45 years, Bob has dipped his toe in a number of musical waters and with the hindsight of time, some of them have rung truer that others. With this visit to the sounds of the American heartland, he has produced a work that will truly last the test of time.
