![]() Bridezilla – The First Dance Don’t believe the hype, listen to the music instead. Sydney based band Bridezilla have been getting more than their fair share of media attention and prestige gigs as of late. A lot of this attention came before they even released their first full-length album but in contrast to most media created extravaganzas, the attention this time is warranted. The five-piece outfit features four girls and one guy and together they create a dreamy take on a pop sound where celestial voices drift through a landscape of relaxed arrangements. This sound is also impacted by the lack of a bass player so the tracks feel even more disconnected from terra firma while they float in the cosmos. Lone male band member, Josh Bush has an interesting approach to the drums, one in which he is light on the cymbals (and drums in general) and uses his right foot sparingly and only when needed to keep the songs from drifting away all together. Adding depth to the songs amid all this sonic confectionary are lyrical ruminations about the chasm between the idea of love and the sometimes harsh reality of trying to actually unite with another human being. This longing for a connection blends beautifully with the song’s yearning nature. Even after numerous spins, this album has yet to break its spell on me and mine. As an antidote to the hustle and bustle of this season, there are few albums that salve the emotions quite so successfully.
