CANT – Dreams Come True
How much does pedigree play when a member of an already idiosyncratic band steps out front and records a project of his own? When it’s multi-instrumentalist Chris Taylor and the parent band is Grizzly Bear, you know to expect the unexpected and Taylor’s new project CANT doesn’t disappoint. The experimental notions that infuse a lot of what Grizzly Bear does are kept intact here but the end results sound almost completely different.
Gone are most of the earthy, almost wooden tones that underline a lot of the work of Taylor’s day job. They are replaced with songs built around keyboard and synthetic sounds and the juxtaposition of the cold sound of technology and warm heat of the human voice is most intoxicating.
The motifs are self-revealing and often times delivered in an almost confessional tone. The tempo is anything but brisk but these slow grooves get under your skin and with the album's short running time still leaves you desiring just that little bit more. The repeat button becomes your ally.
If a side project sounds too much like a simple extension of the member’s main band, what’s the point really? Chris Taylor and his main collaborator George Lewis Jr. have successfully side stepped that issue with a work that stands firmly on its own. The have created a space all their own and one that extends an invitation one would be wise to head.
