Cage The Elephant

It’s not surprising to find out that Cage The Elephant hail from Bowling Green, Kentucky, because like the amber fluid that American state is so well known for, this band has a bite at first, then leaves a warm glow after.

Southern rock had its initial heyday back in the seventies, a resurgence in the nineties but thanks to now bands like Drive-By Truckers, Kings of Leon and even old timer bands like The Allman Brothers (who never really went away) is currently enjoying chart success again. With radio play, sold out gigs and young people back in black rock band tee shirts with torn off sleeves, it’s an art form popular with the masses again.

This five-piece band ticks all the right boxes for proper southern exposure.  Sinewy guitar lines, ballroom bombast bass lines, earthy and unpretentious vocals and of course the obligatory extended jams. These instrumental works outs are thankfully not too excessive in nature or time however and this gives the album a sensibility in line with modern pop and rock records.

Challenging it’s not but there is a warm comfort in the familiar and with enough subtle surprises to keep interest intact, Cage The Elephant is a good party record and would make a suitable soundtrack for a decent amount of outlandish behavior.
