Cameras – In Your Room
Is being the buzz band of the moment a good thing or not? With a band like Cameras, who can come across all subtle and ethereal one moment and then bold and brash the next, subduing that element of surprise by too much press and expectation is not a good thing.
In Your Room unfolds in a way that emphasizes the fact that this is an album and not just a collection of random songs. The band can dip their toes into a number of different waters but always sound like they have an overall idea of a solid group ethic. The nine tracks impart a sense of discovery that works best in a first time discovery mode.
Eleanor Dunlop has a great set of pipes and the songs built around her voice tend to be more delicate while the tracks that feature Fraser Harvey’s vocals out front dip into a more decades’ earlier vibe. Even with Harvey’s pommie tones on top, Dunlop still grounds the songs with an earthy wash.
For those lucky enough to hear the album free of the media hype, it’s a more visceral experience. For the rest of us it still remains an arresting way to sooth your ears. Rob Hudson www.myspace.com/camerasband
