Cut Copy – Zonoscope

There is exuberance at the heart of Cut Copy’s Zonoscope that defies categorisation and genre. The band is unafraid to progress and the end result is a work that may challenge some listeners but it’s a task made easy by a series of songs that are just plain fun to experience.

The band has taken their earlier approach and expanded on it in a number of ways. The songs are now generally longer (the last track Sun God is over 15 minutes long!) and while they still incorporate the passion and energy of the short blast early songs, they have now supplemented that approach with more studio skills and expanded song ideas.

It’s a sign that a band has real vision when they can extend their craft without the songs coming across like jumbled mixes of overachievement. There is a fine line there and Cut Copy seem comfortable on the razor’s edge. This isn’t just a callous exercise in artistic statement either as there are still those moments of transcendence like the uplifting vocal joy in songs like Where I’m Going or the understated and evocative Strange Nostalgia For The Future or even the guitar driven Alisa.

Stepping past the easy synth-pop description and finding a place for their music in a more universal realm, Cut Copy are hitting a stride that many would do well to keep up with.
