Cut Off Your Hands - Hollow
From the moment the cascade of notes that is You Should Do Better comes tumbling out of your speakers to the last fading notes of the sombre final track Buried, Hollow gives you a primer course in the delights of smooth New Zealand pop.
After a multiple year delay in following up their debut EP You & I, the band has transitioned their sound to a more fluid approach. While it may be seen as less assertive in some corners, the end results are a seamless approach that pushes a more elegant vocal delivery and subservient instrumentation to the forefront.
There are still those classic jangly moments like Hollowed Out where the human voice jumps out of a sea of Rickenbacker waves and the big guitar sound of Down & Out but with most tracks the vocals are the lead instrument. The insistent buzz of previous works has been sanded mostly smooth.
The small island nation of New Zealand has always had a rich music tradition and more than its fair share of crystalline pop moments. With the LP Hollow, Cut Off Your Hands readily adds to that desirable collection. Rob Hudson www.myspace.com/cutoffyourhands
