![]() Flight 666 (The Film) – Iron Maiden Having never been a particular fan of concert footage videos (go on name more than a few that sustain any lasting interest) and having caught Iron Maiden in the flesh back in 2008 in Brisbane, I approached this DVD with more than a little trepidation. To properly describe Flight 666, the dual disc package is actually the main titled documentary on the tour with an added bonus disc of live footage. I first watched the excellent doco on the tour made by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn (the folks behind the documentaries Metal: A Headbanger's Journey and Global Metal). It spoke of the band leasing a large commercial airplane and outfitting it to take band, crew and equipment around the world on a tour that would take in the far corners of the globe. It was also to be piloted by the band’s lead singer Bruce Dickinson. So far this was an extremely far cry from the usual Tarago tours that most bands have in their resume. There are also many quite humorous clips of the band in after hours/off stage mode doing radical youth pursuits like playing golf and tennis (with Pat Cash!). This glimpse into their adult lives puts the band’s musical approach into perspective. This isn’t a group of ragged youth pummeling ears night after night but a group of mature and consummate performers that are still on the road because they love to feel the rush of playing live and drinking in the fan’s adulation. This professionalism also extends to the band’s sound and performing style. The second live disc features tracks recorded from stops throughout the tour (and world) and plays a bit like a greatest hits package. The stage sets, sound, lighting and props (including the obligatory appearance of band monster mascot Eddie – this time in a five metre high robot version) are all excellent and the band is in fine form. Now based on your like or dislike of heavy metal music, you will find all this either cliché and predictable or consistent and powerful. Regardless Iron Maiden as a band have been around for a long time and have penned some classics songs of the genre. They have also never taken what they do out of context and know that even though they have rabid fans who love everything they do that that level of worship also comes with responsibilities and in that regards the band puts their heart and soul into what they do. That effort shines through throughout Flight 666. Rob Hudson www.ironmaiden.com
